It takes a few weeks for me to get use to working in the dark by 4pm! It's more about studying atmosphere & less about light, with our short days.

WINTER BLOOMS

Whenever my ramblings take me thru the Hudson Valley…I like to stop at Battenfeld's in Red Hook, NY for some fresh blooms.

Nothing more inviting than greenhouses full of Hybrid Anemones & Rananculus in the middle of winter.

The wonder of it all. No matter how many pink sunrise I've seen, a bit of snow can turn everything magical. Adding my deer sketch onto this morning sketch is just a few clicks on photoshop. From breezy informality of a quick sketch to a new winter design. Love these productive morning.

A very mild December morning. Unusual opportunity for me to go out with my sketchbook + charcoal.

NATURE INSPIRED

We have a day of snow on the first day of spring, last weekend. A deer wander into my view. ..

I kind of like my little sketch of the deer.

Wind up spending the day doodling with swirls & winter vines. This might be my last winter design for awhile.

This 9B soft pencil is just the perfect tool for a quick winter sketch, another bleak winter day outside my window. A bit of  tinted turpentine wash makes this look like a watercolor.

Quiet moods of nature , after a storm. I use a 9B soft lead & some turpentine wash for this monotone winter sketch. This simple tool allows me to convey the naturalistic detail & atmosphere illusion of a winter landscape.

PURE SOLITUDE

Winter has always been one of quiet pleasure. This sketch is from memory. Driving home at night, the snowy fields glow in the semi-darkness, despite not having a full moon. When there's a full moon, the whole landscape is bright & magical.

SNOWY DAWN

Before I get too tied up with projects & chores, I took time out this morning to watch the sun as it paints the sky.

CHARCOAL & COLOR PENCIL

Never tried it before. I layer pink color pencil over the chacoal drawing.  By rubbing the color pencil over the charcoal, I dont have to use fixative with this charcaol drawing. When my experimental approach works, it's a good day.

MORNING HIKE

Bundle up & took a wintery hike this morning. Despite the chill, I enjoy being in nature & taking that inspiration back to my studio.

A grey winter sky hangs over the lonely landscape... muted whites & blues against foggy blue haze.
